Four-year Ph.D. at Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of Eindhoven University Empty Four-year Ph.D. at Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of Eindhoven University

Mon 30 Aug 2010 - 17:11
Job opening
We currently have a four-year Ph.D. position open.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of Eindhoven University invites applications for a four-year Ph.D. position in Mathematics to begin preferably in Fall 2010. The starting date can be further discussed with interested applicants.

Topic:
The research topic is in applied probability and stochastic networks. Applied probability and stochastic networks are concerned with the analysis of stochastic systems in applications like manufacturing, logistics, computer-communication systems and call centers. A very fruitful line of research is concerned with developing powerful algorithms to solve various classes of structured Markov processes. These methods are known as Matrix-Analytic Methods (MAM). The goal of the proposed research is to expand the applicability of MAM by investigating a large(r) class of Markov processes including Markov additive processes with a general background state-space.

Candidate:
Preference will be given to candidates in any branch of applied mathematics and to candidates from a different background (e.g. engineering) but with strong mathematical foundation. Research experience will be highly valued.
The successful applicant will hold a Masters degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering Sciences or related fields. All applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and transcripts. Proficiency in English is also required.

Team:
The project will be carried out at Eurandom, which is a vibrant international institute currently hosting about 30 PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. The research team consists of the candidate, Prof. Ivo Adan, Dr. Maria Vlasiou, and Prof. Bert Zwart.

Procedure:
Applicants should email me with their complete package information. Upon selection, letters of recommendation will be required from two ore more references and should evaluate the candidate's research experience. Please include the contact information of two references in your submitted material.

Benefits:
The gross monthly salary is in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU), increasing from € 2042 per month initially, to € 2612 in the fourth year. An extensive fringe benefits package is included. Additional budget allows for extensive research visits abroad.
