PhD Candidate for Probability (1.0 FTE)

Faculty of Science
Maximum salary: € 2,840 gross/month
Vacancy number: 62.18.18
Application deadline: 18 April 2018
Logo NWO

Responsibilities

We seek an outstanding, highly motivated student with an excellent mathematical background for a PhD candidacy in the project ’Fluctuations of the metastable distribution in general SIS using NMF’ under the supervision of Dr Henk Don. This position is partly funded by the NWO STAR cluster. The project is in the area of probability. More precisely, you will study interacting particle systems. The SIS epidemic process (or contact process) models the spread of infectious diseases in complex networks. The goal of the project is to develop tools to analyse and understand the process behaviour in metastable equilibrium. We particularly aim to investigate fluctuations and correlations.

The position is supported by a generous travel allowance and you will be encouraged to attend and contribute to international scientific meetings. You will have a light teaching load, which, if necessary, may be carried out in English.
Work environment

This project is embedded in the Applied Stochastics group of the Department of Mathematics at Radboud University. The Applied Stochastics group is chaired by Prof. Eric Cator; other members currently include Dr Ross Kang, one postdoctoral researcher, and three PhD candidates. The Department of Mathematics is part of the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics (IMAPP), which has a friendly and open professional atmosphere. This year, the mathematics programme has earned the highest undergraduate student ratings nationwide.

With its Roman foundations, Nijmegen stakes a claim to being the oldest city in the Netherlands. While it has convenient and efficient transport links to larger cities such as Eindhoven, Utrecht and Amsterdam (particularly to airports in two of those cities), residents also benefit from the close proximity of nature and greenspace access.
What we expect from you

   an MSc degree in Mathematics (or a closely related discipline) by the start of the contract;
   a decent background in probability;
   proficiency in English.

What we have to offer

   employment: 1.0 FTE;
   a maximum gross monthly salary of € 2,840 based on a 38-hour working week;
   in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
   the gross starting salary amounts to €2,222 per month, and will increase to €2,840 in the fourth year;
   you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years;
   you will be classified as a PhD Candidate in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO);
   you will be able to make use of our Dual Career Service where our Dual Career Officer will assist with family related support, such as child care, and help your partner prepare for the local labour market and with finding an occupation.
