Post-doc/Pre-doc Research Fellow in Epidemiology/Biostatistics at University of Ioannina Empty Post-doc/Pre-doc Research Fellow in Epidemiology/Biostatistics at University of Ioannina

Tue 10 Oct 2023 - 15:42
Job Summary: The Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology at the University of Ioannina School of Medicine
in Ioannina, Greece, seeks a Post-doc or Pre-doc Research Fellow in Epidemiology/Biostatistics to work on the
following research project:

The post is funded by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) International entitled: “Investigating the impact
of sleep on the development of the reproductive system cancers”. We propose to better understand how sleep and
sleep medication might be associated with reproductive system cancers development. We hypothesise that sleep
medication and traits, including duration, chronotype, snoring, and insomnia, may notably influence susceptibility
to reproductive system cancers. We further hypothesise that sleep disturbances affect cancer initiation through
novel metabolomic pathways that have yet to be explored. We will address four objectives:
1. To prospectively examine the association of sleep traits with prostate (PCa) and endometrial (ECa) cancer
incidence in the UK Biobank (UKB).
2. To perform a mediation analysis of sleep-metabolomic signals-PCa and ECa in a subset of 269,276 UKB
participants.
3. To identify potential causal relations between sleep traits, PCa and ECa using Mendelian randomisation
(MR) analyses and MR mediation analyses for any metabolite that gives some evidence of mediation from
objective 2.
4. To examine the impact of sleep medication on PCa and ECa by conducting a cohort study using Clinical
Practice Research Datalink (CPRD)-linked Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data.

Duties and responsibilities: We are looking to appoint an individual with a background in epidemiology,
biostatistics or other related discipline, with strong statistical and data management skills. The post holder will
contribute to the project by conducting data management and statistical analyses, interpreting results and
drafting manuscripts. The postholder will work with Dr Christos Chalitsios and Prof. Kostas Tsilidis. The postholder will be based within the Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology at the University of Ioannina Medical
School in Ioannina, Greece.

Essential requirements: The post-holder should have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in
epidemiology or a closely aligned field, or have equivalent professional experience. He/she should have strong
data management skills (using Stata and/or R) alongside solid statistical skills.

Further Information: The post is full-time and fixed-term for 12 months, with a possibility of extension
depending on performance and funding. For additional information and formal discussion, please contact Dr
Christos Chalitsios (christos.chalitsios@uoi.gr). To apply for the position, please send a full CV and a cover letter
explaining your suitability for the project to Dr Christos Chalitsios (christos.chalitsios@uoi.gr).

Closing date: December 1st, 2023
Annual gross salary: €24,000 (Pre-doc) & 27,000 (Post-doc)
