The Position
The Department of Biostatistics and the Department of Public Health of the Erasmus Medical Center (Erasmus University), Rotterdam, the Netherlands have a vacancy for a joint fulltime PhD student in biostatistics on the topic of Personalized Screening Intervals for Biomarkers: Linking Joint Models to Cancer Surveillance, under the supervision of Dr. Dimitris Rizopoulos and Professor Ewout Steyerberg. This is a fully funded position for a period of 4 years, starting from June 2016. This position is primarily focused on research, but the PhD student also will be expected to assist in the teaching and consulting responsibilities.


The Department of Biostatistics of Erasmus MC is well known for its innovative statistical research in analyzing complex data structures (longitudinal and survival data, correlated data, missing data, censored data, Bayesian techniques, smoothing techniques, etc.). The Department of Public Health is at the forefront of methodological research in the field of medical decision making and personalized medicine.

Profile of Successful Candidates
Successful candidates are expected to have a strong background and preferably hold a master’s degree in Statistics/Biostatistics or a related field. Candidates should have an interest in developing and applying quantitative approaches to medical decision-making problems. Knowledge of mixed effects models, survival analysis, Bayesian statistics, R or C++ will be considered a plus. A good command of the English language is a prerequisite.

The terms of employment are according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for Dutch University Medical Centers (CAO UMC).
