Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology
Thu 29 Apr 2010 - 23:47
Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Clinical Pharmacology,
University of Oxford
Reference HD/10/006
Salary - £28,983 to £35,646
We are seeking a population and statistical geneticist to join an existing
team working on a project to collect, genotype, analyse and characterise
3,500 DNA samples from rural populations throughout the British Isles. The
original aims of the project were to establish a control population for
case-control studies of the association between genetic factors and disease,
and to characterise the detailed genetic population structure of the UK
population. Funding has been made available to continue the project with a
primary aim of identifying the genetic basis of facial features using 3D
facial photographs.
This post is funded by the Wellcome Trust for 4 years. The project is led by
Professor Sir Walter Bodmer, whose research group works on statistical
issues in modern genetic studies, in particular as applied to a
comprehensive study of the people of the British Isles. It is a
collaboration with Professor Peter Donnelly, from the Wellcome Trust Centre
of Human Genetics, Professor Josef Kittler (University of Surrey), Professor
Tim Spector (St Thomas's Hospital) and Professor Paul Longley (UCL). Further
information about the 'People of the British Isles' project is available at
http://www.pobi.ox.ac.uk
You will play a key role in the analysis of both the genotypic and the
phenotypic data obtained in this study. You will develop statistical and
population genetic methods for the analysis of large bodies of genotypic
population data. The development of novel approaches to the analysis of
population genetic structure and patterns of linkage disequilibrium will be
another key component of your duties. The work will also include
consideration and development of approaches to the search for genetic
markers underlying normal phenotypes, and the analysis of the relationships
between different bodies of genetic data from the UK and surrounding
European populations.
You should have a strong up-to-date background in statistical population
genetics and its applications. Good computational skills are essential, and
you should have a doctorate in a relevant area of research.
Informal enquiries should be directed to
walter.bodmer@hertford.oxford.ac.uk.
Further written information and an application form is available by e-mail:
admin@clinpharm.ox.ac.uk or by telephoning 01865 617024, quoting the
reference number shown above. The closing date for applications is 5.00 pm
on Thursday 13 May 2010.
