MSc and PhD scholarships, Social Statistics & Demography, University of Southampton
Wed 8 Feb 2012 - 15:07
Applications are currently being invited for postgraduate programmes at the Division of Social Statistics and Demography at the University of Southampton.
We hope to put candidates forward for both MSc and PhD scholarships over the coming year to start in October 2012. These scholarships include:
• Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) 1+3 studentships through the University of Southampton's Doctoral Training Centre: these involve completing a 1 year MSc in Demography or Social Statistics and then doing a 3 year PhD. These scholarships pay £13,590 per year tax free (2011-2012 rates), plus the chance to apply for an extra £3,000 per year for training in advanced quantitative methods. Your fees are also covered (worth another £3,732 per annum). We have up to 10 such scholarships to allocate in the coming year.
• Office for National Statistics (ONS) PhD studentships: for 2012 we are delighted to be offering up to two 3 year PhD studentships. These are aimed at students who have or are expecting to complete an approved Masters programme with a merit (an average mark of 60%) or other equivalent, and will provide a generous stipend, of a similar level to our ESRC scholarships, and which also cover fees. Your research areas will be related to the ONS’s current programmes and projects.
• Population Investigation Committee (PIC) scholarships: in recent years, the PIC has offered one year scholarships for students undertaking our MSc in Demography. We are hoping they will run a similar scheme this year, where we will be looking to put forward up to 3 top candidates. We are usually successful in obtaining these scholarships for at least one student per year, worth £15,000.
• Social Sciences Master’s scholarships: we are delighted to offer 2 one-year taught MSc scholarships for the 2012 academic year, one for Home/EU students worth £3,000 and one for International students worth £5,000.
