Two 4-year PhD studentships at the University of Cambridge Empty Two 4-year PhD studentships at the University of Cambridge

Fri 17 Feb 2012 - 11:30
Applications are invited from UK/EU nationals* for two PhD studentships in
Cardiovascular Epidemiology hosted at the new Pfizer-Cambridge University
Translational Centre for Cardiovascular Research. These prestigious
studentships, which are funded under the Medical Research Council’s
Industrial studentship scheme, will commence in October 2012. The 4-year
time frame will allow successful applicants to spend a year studying on a
Masters course in Epidemiology at the University, followed by a 3-year PhD
research project, working closely with both University and Pfizer
scientists. This programme offers a unique opportunity to relate the PhD
research to drug development in a real world setting. It also allows the
successful candidate to deepen his/her understanding of the many challenges
involved in translating population-based research to inform development of
new medicines.

Both projects will advance understanding of the potential causal relevance
of novel and emerging risk markers to cardiovascular and metabolic diseases,
particularly in the area of inflammation. Students will have the opportunity
to develop a range of skills, including: statistical analysis of large-scale
epidemiological datasets; genetic and biomarker epidemiology; integration of
multidisciplinary datasets; and functional genomics. Prospective applicants
with strong quantitative skills are particularly encouraged.

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a 2:1 degree or higher,
preferably in a related quantitative (eg, [bio]statistics, mathematics, etc)
or biological (eg, human genetics, molecular biology etc) subject. Support
includes a generous annual MRC/Pfizer stipend, fees at UK/EU student rate,
research expenses and some travel costs.

*Before applying, please check your eligibility under MRC residency
